Zach Merrett
Such has been the smoothness of Zach Merrett’s transition into the AFL, that it’s east to forget he’s still only midway through his third season.
But with 50 games under his belt, Merrett is now entrenched in the Essendon midfield and the increased responsibility he’s taken on this season should only aid his development.
Merrett’s averaging 28 possessions per game this season and he picked up 24 (ten contested) against the Eagles. His work around the clearances (seven) and stoppages (six) helped Essendon hold the edge (44-38) in that department despite the Eagles dominance on the scoreboard in the second half.
But it’s Merrett’s defensive work that was equally impressive. He laid nine tackles in the first half and finished with 11 for the night.
Joe Daniher
The Essendon attacking spearhead was moving into some nice form before the bye and pleasingly the break showed no signs of slowing his momentum.
In the six games leading into the West Coast clash, Daniher kicked 12 goals, averaged 13 possessions and five marks. Last night, he had 14 disposals (eight contested), six marks (three contested and three inside 50) and booted three to goals to take his season tally to 22.
His best haul in a season came last year when he kicked 34. If Daniher can top that and continue the upward curve he’s on in many other key statistical areas, he can walk away from 2016 well pleased with his output.
The old guard
James Kelly continued his strong form this season, collecting 29 possessions and laying seven tackles against the Eagles. While most of the post January 12 recruits has suffered injury (including Mark Jamar last night), Kelly has bucked the trend.
In recent weeks, he’s moved in to the midfield after spending the early part of the season in defence. He’s recorded at least 20 possessions in 11 of his 12 games this season.
Fellow premiership player, Craig Bird was also impressive last night. He gathered 26 possessions (11 contested) and laid eight tackles. While Brendon Goddard also continued his good form with 22 possessions and seven tackles.
Ruck stocks
Matthew Leuenberger has been one of the Bombers strong performers this season and his combination with Mark Jamar in recent weeks has not only helped the midfield, but the pair has also hit the scoreboard.
Both are under an injury cloud for next week’s match against St Kilda.
John Worsfold said after the game Shaun McKernan and Sam Michael shape as the likely contenders for the big man spot(s), while Joe Daniher may also have to spend more time in the centre bounces.
If McKernan were to get the call-up, it would be on the back of some impressive VFL form. Two weeks ago he led the Bombers comeback win with three goals and 18 hitouts.
Inner sanctum
Essendon again opened its doors to Channel 7 and the images provided plenty of insight.
John Worsfold’s message remained clear and calm despite the scoreboard. He also regularly sought feedback from the players and asked them what was happening on the ground and why.
