A move higher up the ground has enabled Joe Daniher to produce his most consistent run of goals, according to Robert Shaw.
Daniher has booted 27 goals in his last 11 matches, after kicking seven goals in the first seven games of the season.
He's kicked eight goals in the last two weeks, to take his season tally to 34 – equaling his career high with four games still to play.
Shaw said Daniher’s ability to roam higher up the ground has made him more unpredictable and harder for opposition defences to contain.
“He’s now playing as a true centre half forward and then he’s getting back to the goal square,” Shaw said.
“He’s added another dimension to his game which makes him hard to play on.
“One of the key areas he had to improve was his aerobic capacity and that has developed as we’ve gone on, because you can’t play those roles without being able to run.
“If you project that forward another two pre-seasons where that part of the game edges towards ‘elite’, you’re going to have a very special player.”
Daniher spent time working with Essendon all time leading goal kicker, Matthew Lloyd, last season.
Shaw said the Bombers could consider getting a specialist coach back on board for next year.
“I think it’s something Essendon should look at and maybe dedicate a day working on the technical side, his preparation and also more importantly with his mindset,” Shaw said.
“The technical issues are still there – missing to the right – and that is a work in progress.”
