Essendon has recalled young players Darcy Parish, Kyle Langford and Mason Redman to its squad for Sunday’s clash against the Western Bulldogs.
Experienced big man Mark Jamar also returns to the 25-man squad that will be trimmed to 22 on Friday.
Parish and Langford have become regular features in the Essendon midfield throughout the year.
In his first season, Parish will line up for his 19th AFL game when the side runs out against the Bulldogs, while Langford has added 15 games this year to the eight he played in 2015.
“They’ve both really come along well,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.
“Darcy is obviously one of the young players that is a real big chance to win the NAB Rising Star award this year so that speaks volumes for how well he’s performed in what’s been a relatively inexperienced and young midfield all year.
“Langford – we’re really pleased, he’s played a little bit more time through the midfield than he has in the forward line this year so that’s been a big learning curve for him and we’ve seen some really good signs.”
The inclusion of Mark Jamar gives Worsfold another ruck option.
“We had Grimley doing some ruck work last week as a tall forward,” Worsfold said.
“If Jamar comes in, we’ll use him in the same sort of role – he’ll do a bit of ruck work, play up forward and gives the opportunity for us to split the load a little bit with Leuenberger who has carried a big workload all year.”
Essendon enter the clash with the Bulldogs fresh from its second win of the season last week against Gold Coast.
“Obviously we were really pleased with the efforts of the boys, not only last week, but over the last six or seven weeks and we want to build on that,” Worsfold said.
“We want to come out and take it up to the Bulldogs.
“They’re obviously a very good team and are going to challenge us in many ways but we want to step to that.”
