A lot has changed in recent seasons, but one constant has been the unyielding passion of the Essendon supporters.
In the Club’s most trying times, the fans have stood up and provided inspiration for the players.
We found the story of Daniel Rigby particularly heartwarming.
His mother, Kristen, detailed her son’s dedication in a recent letter to the Club.
Hi,
I am sending this on behalf of my 8 year old son, Daniel Rigby, one of Essendon's junior members.
Daniel wanted me to send you his letter but also photos of his prosthetic leg. Daniel was born with a short femur bone. He asked for his prosthetic leg to "Don the Sash" and had his prosthetic made in with the Essendon sash. He proudly shows it off everyday amongst his school class of Sydney supporters.
Daniel loves the Bombers, and loves watching and playing AFL. Last year he was in Auskick and this year he has signed up to play for his local junior football team.
Best wishes,
Kristen Rigby (on behalf of Daniel Rigby)
Daniel also sent in this postcard to the club. It reads:
Dear Essendon,
In the holidays I went to Newcastle to visit my Uncle and I went to the beach.
I went back to Sydney and went to an AFL game.
We played an AFL match. It was Essendon vs. Sydney.
I was Essendon.
There was 1 minute to go, Sydney were winning by two goals and then we scored two goals and drew.
Love your biggest fan,
Daniel Rigby
We think that Daniel is an absolute champ for plenty of reasons and he has definitely taken ‘Don the Sash’ to a whole new level.
We’ll hopefully be able to catch-up with Daniel next time we go and visit Sydney!
