Essendon Coach John Worsfold doesn’t expect Brendon Goddard or Mark Baguley to change their approach in light of the circumstances facing Essendon this season.
Goddard and Baguley were named Captain and Vice-Captain, taking over from Jobe Watson and Dyson Heppell.
“To be a leader, generally it shouldn’t be tough if you’re appointed to be who you are,” Worsfold said.
“You bring your own strengths and you bring your own character. We expect Brendon and Mark to be themselves. Their natural traits show strong leadership qualities, so really that’s the number one thing.
“There are a lot of responsibilities with leadership, that doesn’t change no matter what circumstances you’re in.
“We acknowledge its unique (the situation) but what’s expected from people and the role does not change.”
Worsfold said the Club went through a thorough process in determining its new leaders.
A wider leadership group will be established in the coming weeks as Essendon finalises its squad for the season.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity for those two guys (Goddard and Baguley),” Worsfold said.
“There was a process to go through. It was important to do it right, not just rush into it – but be really clear about what we needed, how we wanted to go about it and then make the appointment.
“We will have a leadership group but we’ll work through that over the next couple of weeks.”
The Bombers are also close to confirming a few more recruits after signing Ryan Crowley earlier this week.
