ESSENDON will be strengthened by the return of Andrew Welsh and Andrew Lovett for this Sunday's clash with St Kilda, but is likely to again be without captain Matthew Lloyd and midfielder Jason Winderlich.

Welsh (leg) and Lovett (corked thigh) are available for selection after missing Saturday night's draw with the Brisbane Lions, but Lloyd (bruised heel) and Winderlich (back) are expected to miss the crucial match.

"We'll have a look at them this morning. It's our first real training session of the week, so we'll see how they go," coach Matthew Knights said at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Tuesday morning.

"They're probably more unlikely than likely at this stage, but we'll give them an opportunity to see how they go today, and make an assessment post that."

Knights said both Lloyd and Winderlich had improved over the past seven days but indicated the club was not likely to take any risks with the key duo.

He also said further analysis of Winderlich's back injury had confirmed it was not related to the split disc that nearly ended his career last year.

"He's freed up really well in the last seven days, and he walked around last week putting his hand up for selection, but that's just Jason," Knights said.

"It was just a very bad back spasm, it just locked up, but he's freed up terrifically well. That was our concern initially, that it was linked to the other injury, but that wasn't the case.

"We feel really confident he's going to be fine long term, but we won't be taking any risks with him in the short term."

Ruckman Tom Bellchambers is also available for selection after serving a one-week VFL suspension.

Knights said he expected Jay Neagle, who has kicked six goals in the last two matches, and Michael Hurley, who has showed promise at both ends of the ground since round 15, to remain in the senior side even when Lloyd does return.

"They didn't have huge games last week but they were playing against good opponents," he said.

"I think they showed enough to suggest they deserve to keep their spot, and from my perspective, I want to get as many games into these young guys as possible because we understand they're going to be fine players in the future and the more experience they get, the better."

He said the performance of the young pair over the past few weeks would make it difficult for Darcy Daniher to break into the side, even though the young prospect kicked five goals for the Bendigo Bombers on the weekend.

"We were pleased with Darcy's performance. We've played him back a lot early in his time at Essendon, but in the TAC Cup, he played forward," he said.

"He kicked five goals last week, played very well and was very aggressive. He marked the ball well, so he's certainly pushing up.

"I would say it would be tough to push in with the other two boys in there, and [Adam] McPhee as well."
