Dons Rising Stars
Orazio Fantasia was nominated for the Rising Star award after the final home and away game last season, but he remains eligible this year.
His three goals against Richmond took his season tally to 21, including 11 in the last month and he will surely feature heavily in discussions when the panel meets on Monday morning.
The 2013 National Draft looks like proving a profitable one for the Bombers. Despite the sanctions imposed the Club landed Fantasia with the 55th overall selection and secured Zach Merrett at pick 26.
Merrett continued his stellar form against the Tigers collecting 34 possessions, laying ten tackles and kicking a goal.
Last November’s blue chip pick, Darcy Parish, was also in good touch collecting 20 possessions and laying seven tackles.
Ambrose form as a defender
John Worsfold’s willingness to try players in new roles is reaping rewards and possibly the best example is Patrick Ambrose.
The 24 year old spent most of his first two seasons in the AFL in attack, but he’s adjusted to life in defence with aplomb.
Ambrose lined up on Tigers spearhead Jack Riewoldt and kept him to just one behind. Coming into the game Riewoldt had kicked 37 goals, to sit eighth on the competition’s goal tally.
Hams excels in new role
A consistent VFL performer, Hams’ determined, aggressive and courageous approach to each contest belied his frame.
But for much of his first three seasons on the Essendon list injury prevented Hams from showing his ability on the AFL stage.
Now having shaken off his injury troubles, Hams is enjoying career best form and it’s coming in a new role across half forward.
Having turned 22 this week Hams marked the milestone by playing his sixth straight AFL game during which he laid eight tackles and kicked a goal.
Thrilling VFL win
A Jason Ashby snap with just seconds remaining secured Essendon VFL a thrilling comeback win.
The victory solidified the side’s place in the top eight; having moved two games clear of ninth placed Box Hill.
Jackson Merrett (28 possessions), James Polkinghorne (28) and Ryan Crowley (26) on his return from injury were all influential in the result.
Shaun Edwards (27 possessions and two goals) set up the match-winning goal and Aaron Francis (18) was consistent in defence.
The VFL listed, Ben Dobson, kicked five goals from his 20 possessions in a classy display.
