Former AFL Coach Robert Shaw would look at recalling some mature bodies and resting a young star for Essendon’s match against Carlton on Sunday.

The Bombers have a six-day break to recover from the loss to Collingwood on Anzac Day, before meeting another big rival.

Essendon’s match committee will have a number of options to consider after the VFL side recorded an 85-point win over the Magpies.

Among the best performers were Ryan Crowley (30 possessions, four goals) and Nathan Grima who was opposed to Travis Cloke and kept the key forward to five possessions, two goals and one mark.

“To balance the development of the young players I would certainly look at Crowley who got himself into really good form and also Grima who played an outstanding game on Cloke,” Shaw said.

“There are two strong, big, experienced players that can complement these younger players.”

Shaw said the Bombers could also consider resting first year player Darcy Parish.

The number five draft pick has been one of the standouts for the team so far this season.

The 18 year old has averaged 22 possessions (ten contested), four score involvements, four tackles and three inside 50’s across the first five games of the season.

“He’s been a shining light, but he’s very young, he’s still a developing player,” Shaw said.

“If you want a 200 game player, you might have to give him a rest.

“From (my) experience with young players the first sign of fatigue is their kicking – his kicking lacked penetration and missed targets.

“Send him home, send him down the bush for a week and give him a spell – that’s about management.”

During his press conference last week, John Worsfold was asked whether he’d given consideration to resting Parish in light of Melbourne’s move to leave out fellow top draft pick Clayton Oliver.

Worsfold said it’s not only the workloads of the young players that are being monitored, but also the more experienced players who completed only part of the pre-season.

“We’re monitoring his (Parish) workloads, for sure,” Worsfold said last week.

“For us, we’ve got quite a lot of players in a similar boat – whether it be a James Kelly and monitoring what he’s stepped up to.

“That’s on our radar in terms of managing those guys throughout the whole year.”
