Essendon will likely target a tall with one of its second round selections according to afl.com.au’s Draft expert Callum Twomey.
The National Draft will be held on Friday and for the third year in a row the Bombers will use two top 20 selections and after four top 30 picks last years, the Dons hold three (1, 20, 29) this time around.
The Club is expected to land a midfielder with the first overall pick and Twomey said the Bombers could target a key position player with either of their round two picks.
“The Bombers probably would be looking for a taller type with one of these two picks, given that pick one is going to be a midfielder of some description,” Twomey said.
“A tall forward – if one pops up there at 20 or 29, the Bombers would have to think pretty hard about it, given that’s an area, when you have a look at the list, that they could have some bolstering.”
Josh Battle could be a potential option for the Bombers in round two of the National Draft.
The Dandenong Stingray is a 192cm marking forward who is a reliable shot at goal.
At the Draft Combine he clocked in at 10.07 for the 3km time trial and posted a 13.7 in the beep test.
“He kicked six goals in a final which really showed his goal kicking prowess – he is a great goal kicker, he’s been working really hard alongside Matthew Lloyd,” Twomey said.
“He could go a little bit earlier but it wouldn’t surprise if he’s available in the mid 20’s.”
Another key position option could be Todd Marshall from the Murray Bushrangers.
He kicked 22 goals in 11 games this season.
Marshall is 197cm and is also an accurate set shot for goal.
“Todd Marshall is an interesting one – a player we probably spoke a lot about as the best key forward throughout the year, but hasn’t really been able to put together those big couple of games to shoot himself right into the top ten.
“If he was there at 20 I think he’d be a great choice for the Bombers. Maybe he might have been in their thinking earlier on in the year for that first selection.
“In the end he’s had some injuries, but his talent – he picks the ball up at ground level, he’s great above his head and he’s a really nice shot for goal as well – should see him drafted in the first 20 spots.”
