Adam Cooney isn’t sure if he’s played his last AFL game, but the Brownlow Medal winner made sure he thanked those close to him throughout his 250th match.
In a contest that pitted his old team against his current one, Cooney strode on to Etihad Stadium alongside his family.
“It was great to have the family there, they’re obviously huge support for me, they love their footy,” he said.
“They love the footy club, they love coming into the rooms and they love all of the boys.
“My wife Haylea, she’s been a huge support for me for my whole career.”
When the game got underway, Cooney collected 22 possessions and kicked a tidy goal – the 202nd of his career.
He was a solid contributor as the Bombers tried to fight back after a slow start.
A 30-point quarter time margin was only increased by ten points by the final siren.
Cooney played 219 games for the Bulldogs before crossing to the Bombers at the end of 2014.
After the final siren he thanked the fans he didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to.
He ran to the Bulldogs cheersquad before being carried off in front of the Bombers faithful.
As it stands, he’s played 31 games for the Bombers and tasted victory of five occasions.
The first of those wins in round two last season is the Essendon moment that stands out.
“My first win that I was involved in against Hawthorn at the ‘G – reigning premiers,” he said.
“We should have beaten Sydney the week before so we got off to a flyer, I thought we were a shoo-in for the flag.
“But it wasn’t to be but it was certainly a great memory – that first victory with the boys.”
Cooney announced his retirement on Tuesday and admitted to a sense of relief now that a busy week is over.
“I’ve done just about every TV station and radio station there is, so I apologise to everyone," he said.
“I’ve been asked a lot of questions which stirs up a few different memories and a few different emotions.
“I just wanted to get this week over and done with to be honest with you.
“Playing the 250th against the old team was a good coincidence. They were up about tonight, they played well, credit to them.
“But it was a great night and for Stokesy as well to play his 200th, he’s only been here 12 months but he’s had a massive impact on the playing group.”
Cooney will meet with the Dons coaching staff early in the week before deciding if he will line-up against the Blues on Saturday.
