Bombers Captain, Nick O’Brien was one of the side's best with 30 disposals, nine marks and one tackle.
State team defender, James Ferry, found form in the forward line, booting two goals for the Dons.
Daniel Younan was impressive in front of goals, also kicking two majors for the Bombers. He finished with 13 disposals, seven marks and two tackles.
In the pouring rain, it was a tough start for the Dons, who gave up a 12 point lead at quarter time.
The Bombers regained control during the next three quarters but couldn't break away from the home side.
Despite the narrow loss, Essendon has secured a place in the top eight and will begin its finals campaign next weekend.
