John Worsfold is confident the Bombers best is good enough to match it with the competition’s leading sides.
Essendon will face one of its biggest tests of the season when it takes on GWS at Spotless Stadium on Saturday.
The Giants are in second position on the ladder, while the Dons are 11th and looking to rebound from a loss to Richmond last week.
The Tigers were able to control the territorial game against the Bombers, but the result hasn’t dented Worsfold’s faith in his group.
“There are areas of our game that we have to keep addressing and working on,” he said.
“It’s about constant education, constant practice and getting the chemistry of the group together.
“We’ve done a fair bit of work on it over the last few weeks and we’ll need a fair bit more work on it over the next three or four weeks to start seeing that improvement.
“We know we can do it … we were at our worst against Richmond, but that wasn’t just in that regard, we were pretty average in our decision making even going inside 50.
“We’re putting that down to a game where we were just off.
“We need to improve in certain areas of our game we know that, but our best footy will be good enough to challenge.”
The match will be the 300th at AFL level for Brendon Goddard.
The 32 year old leads the Club in clearances this season and Worsfold said Goddard’s form suggests he could play beyond this season.
“His form warrants it, absolutely,” he said.
“It is a long season so we’ll see how his legs are holding up later in the season.
“He’s in great physical shape – to get to 300 games says there is something special about you … talent, but also durability.
“He’s one of those guys that hasn’t dropped away in any facet of his game.
“There is no need to have that conversation at the moment.
“I think we’re all on the same page, with the way he’s playing right now.
“He’s a big part of our team next year.”
