Some of the most decorated Aboriginal sporting stars in Australia’s history have shared their stories with the Essendon playing group.
The first Aboriginal athlete to win an Olympic gold medal Nova Peris, two-time Olympian Kyle Vander Kuyp, former North Melbourne star Phil Krakouer and Essendon Legend Michael Long detailed the challenges they faced throughout their upbringing and professional careers.
“These people are considered trailblazers, they were competing at an elite level at a time where it was the norm for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be racially abused,” General Manager of The Long Walk Leanne Brooke said.
“We’ve come a long way since then and hearing their experience about how they dealt with that and how it made them feel, hopefully it’s a learning experience for everyone.
“People need to be aware of the impact that type of behaviour has on people."
The sporting stars took part in a special cultural awareness session held at the Club’s training base ahead of the Dreamtime at the ‘G clash on Saturday night.
“Dreamtime week is a huge week for The Long Walk, for the Essendon Football Club and also for the community in general,” Brooke said.
“I don’t think we can underestimate how significant it is.
“The purpose of the cultural session is to continue our commitment to raising awareness for staff and players about Aboriginal peoples and cultures.
“It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that Indigenous players have made to the Club.”
The Koori Youth Will Shake Spears dance group performed as part of the session.
They will also perform their celebration dance before the first bounce in Saturday night’s clash.
“This week means a lot to Indigenous people and all Australians,” dancer Mungara Brown said.
“For the AFL to put a game together for our people … I couldn’t think of anything better than to stand out on the ‘G and dance and support our people.”
A free Community event will be held at Federation Square on Saturday from 1pm. The Long Walk will depart at 4:15pm ahead of the Dreamtime at the 'G match.
