Jobe Watson says teammate Conor McKenna possesses the rare ability to hit targets at top speed.

The 21 year old from Tyrone in Northern Ireland is enjoying his best spell of form since making his debut in 2015.

McKenna is averaging 17 disposals, four marks and two tackles per game this season.

“He’s got some real talent and like all of the Irish guys they kick the ball so well,” Watson told 3aw.

“They’re not afraid to back themselves.

“He’s a beautifully balanced player and the more he plays the better he’s going to get.”

McKenna has played eight games this year and is ranked in the top ten at Essendon for disposal efficiency.

Coming into the game against the Power, McKenna was averaging 257 metres gained per match which is the third highest (behind Michael Hurley and James Kelly) among the defenders at the Bombers.

But last Saturday night his 18-disposal effort gained more than 650 metres for the side.

“We’re very lucky our recruiting staff found him and our coaches are starting to develop him,” Watson said.

“He sees the game so well for a guy who hasn’t played a lot of footy.

“Not only can he run at a high speed but he then has composure at that high speed.

“That’s a rare thing to have – a guy who can break the lines running full pace but then still find targets long or short.

“He’s just going to get better and better the more he plays.”
