Matthew Lloyd ended his career as the greatest goal kicker in Essendon’s history.
But the 270 game player said full-forward was a position he knew little about when he started his career with the Bombers.
In fact Kevin Sheedy actually insisted Lloyd play in defence throughout his early games in the reserves in 1995.
But Sheedy knew Lloyd could offer something special in attack and the Coach’s advice to his young star was never forgotten.
“Apart from my parents, Kevin Sheedy had the great influence on me in football,” Lloyd said.
“I’ll never forget meeting Kevin Sheedy the first time as a footballer and he said to me ‘you need to own a house out of football’.
“And he also spoke to me about the respect you’ve got to have for people.
“He turned me from a boy into a man as a footballer and also off the field.
“He also taught me things about my game – I’d never played full-forward before and ‘Sheeds’ said ‘that’s where I want to play you and your hands have to be exceptional’.
“He didn’t let me mark on my chest ever, yet he allowed others to mark of their chest.
“He just had amazing foresight, he was one of the most positive people I’ve ever met, one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met and I’m very grateful he was my football coach for 13 years and also a great friend.”
