John Worsfold wants Andrew McGrath to spend more time in the midfield, but he’s unsure if that will happen this season.
The number one draft pick spent the majority of the last quarter against Port Adelaide across the middle of the ground.
McGrath has spent his first 11 games as an AFL player in defence where he’s averaged 20 disposals, four marks and three tackles per game.
The composure that made him such a highly sought after talent last year has been ever-present, while the surging runs have become more prominent as the weeks have progressed.
“We’re very conscious that as part of Andy’s development, we’ll be giving him some good game time through the midfield,” Worsfold told 3aw.
“There is no urgency with that, it may happen this year – it may not.
“We put him in there in the last quarter (against Port Adelaide) probably from the five minute mark.
“He went on to the wing for five or so minutes and then he went inside for the rest of the game.
“It was just a little taste for him and he may get more of that throughout the year, but the team is settling nicely so if our form holds up I’d be reluctant to make too many changes.”
McGrath picked up 21 disposals against the Power as the Bombers recorded their best win of the season.
Worsfold said the side’s ability to transition from defence into attack was one of the most pleasing aspects of the 70-point victory.
“We were at our worst against Richmond three weeks ago where we just kept butchering it and Richmond smashed us for inside 50s,” Worsfold said.
“We’ve had a real focus on making sure we’re improving that and it really came together.
“I think that’s what people found really exciting – our rebound all the way through the ground but definitely through the back 50.
“We really took the game on … we knew we didn’t want to slow the game down and go safe through any period.
“It’s starting to improve and we’re starting to get the result from that.”
