Joe Misiti says the 1993 Essendon side overcame a form slump and excelled at the right time of the season to win the premiership.

In Misiti’s second season at the Club, the team featuring a group of ‘Baby Bombers’ thumped Carlton by 44 points to lift the premiership cup.

Speaking to The Footy Panel, Misiti said the thought of winning a premiership in his second year never crossed his mind.

“Essendon was a club I supported, I’d been going to watch them since I was five or six years of age with my old man and my uncle,” Misiti said.

“I just wanted to get a game.

“Back then it wasn’t as serious, you didn’t have to train every day. You would train twice a week, play on the Saturday and still have the kegs on a Sunday.

“It was all just fun and games, and then to roll into a premiership in 1993 was unbelievable.

“No one saw it coming, I don’t even think our crazy coach saw it coming.

“People say we were lucky but I don’t believe in luck.

“We did work hard. We just found form at the right time of the year and we all clicked as one.”

Misiti retired from AFL at the end of the 2004 season, after playing 236 games and winning two premierships for Essendon.

“It does feel like a long time ago, especially watching these kids run around nowadays,” Misiti said.

“The boys asked me if there was still someone at Essendon that I played footy with and I don’t think there is besides Jobe and maybe Stants (Brent Stanton).

“I always keep an interest. Obviously I had a fair interest in the club for 14 or 15 years.”
