FIVE out of six – you've got to be happy with that! But are we prepared to use another 'F' word after Saturday's outstanding performance against top-four aspirant and arch-rival Collingwood at the 'G?

Well, after losing to '80s nemesis Hawthorn in round 11 by 51 points, it's fair to say a trip to France – or any other destination starting with 'F' was looking good – as 2009 was our best bet.

Instead, Matty Knights and his team have worked their magic, defied injuries – and smoke screens – to see the Bombers 'Fly' (back) up to win … well, at least have a crack at the finals.

It's a great result, considering we'd won just two matches entering round 12. But after plucking the Magpies' feathers, we're now in the September hunt with seven wins on the board.

Sure, there are plenty of challenges ahead, but after our second best win of the season – and against a team that smashed Geelong by 86 points earlier in the year – it is a great result. No wonder 'Knighter' said it was one of our most significant wins for the season.

What a start from Andrew Welsh? He's played some ripping matches lately, but his effort to kick four goals and win 29 disposals was first-class. He really set the tone with his three successive goals in the opening nine minutes of the match. His tackle on Scott Pendlebury in the first term typified his day.

Our champion skipper Matty Lloyd spent a lot of the day across half-forward – not just as the main target but on the flank – and his tireless work and leadership, not to mention his handy four goals, was a great display.

In the ruck, David Hille was sensational yet again. His form has been brilliant in the second half of the season and his game against the Pies will no doubt continue to push his name in front of the All-Australian selectors.

Gus Monfries was excellent on Heath Shaw. Not only did he keep the Magpie quiet, he also took a cracking mark over Collingwood big man Cameron Wood and finished with a couple to his name.

As for Kyle Reimers – this kid is a beauty. He's as tough as nails; he kicks goals – even from the wing – and represents so much of what our side aspires to for the future. It was a great reward after he received the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination last round. His two goals in the third quarter reignited us and sparked five unanswered goals.

Dustin Fletcher's match-up on Paul Medhurst was a fascinating duel. The man with the 'Inspector Gadget' arms was excellent down back, even though the in-form Maggie still kicked two.

Oh and let's not forget about a fella in the engine room, who just happened to collect a career-best – and lazy – 41 touches. Again, Jobe Watson stuck it up his critics and showed what a top midfielder he has become.

It was a great effort from Jobe, the team and the coaching staff – one of the best wins in recent years.

The ride has been great in recent weeks and it's only getting more FFF … fascinating.
