Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce it has re-signed Senior Coach, John Worsfold, for a further two years. The new deal will see the premiership coach’s tenure at the Club extended until at least the end of 2020 season.
CEO, Xavier Campbell, said Worsfold has played a significant role in helping turn the Club’s fortunes around.
“We are pleased to re-sign John as senior coach of the Club for a further two years,” Campbell said.
“John has been a great addition to our Club through what has been a unique and challenging period. He has brought an enormous amount of stability, and has shown wonderful resilience and commitment to see Essendon emerge in a better place.”
“We feel the progress the team has made under John’s leadership, both culturally and on the playing field is extremely positive, and we believe he is the right man to take us forward.”
Worsfold joined the Bombers in the lead up to the 2016 season, one of the Club’s most trying years. Against the odds he coached the team to three wins and unearthed a number of talented young players, whilst keeping the playing group united.
In 2017 the team wrote the opening chapter in its comeback story, with Worsfold coaching the Bombers to their first finals campaign since 2014.
With solid foundations underpinning the team’s culture and game plan, along with the addition of new players this season, Worsfold believes the Club is moving in the right direction.
“I’m really excited to re-commit to the Club and head into the next three years with a clear vision of what we want to achieve together,” Worsfold said.
“I’d also like to thank the Board, Executive, and in particular the coaching group for their continued support and hard work.”
“We have a playing group which has established a really clear vision, a strong culture and elite standards. We believe this group of players is going to play a lot of football together, and hopefully win a lot of finals moving forward.”
“We know there is a lot of hard work ahead of us if we want to achieve success, but we’re excited and ready for the challenge of taking our game to the next level.”
Essendon travels to Fremantle this weekend for round two of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
