You can join Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy in an exciting celebration of the club’s commitment to football in India at the upcoming Embracing India event at Windy Hill.
Sheedy will be interviewed and joined by current AFL Bombers and Essendon VFLW star Hayley Bullas at the event, which will raise important funds for AFL India’s 2019 National Championship to be held in Kolkata.
Guests will be treated to a three-course Indian feast with soft drinks, while enjoying Bollywood entertainment in a comfortable and fun atmosphere.
There are also many prizes to be won at the event, with all contributions going towards the National Championship.
The tournament will see the best 200 of the country’s 11,000 players, mostly from underprivileged backgrounds, represent their states in both senior and junior divisions and face off for the premierships.
Essendon has made a number of trips to India since 2014, solidifying its support of a number of development programs.
The club’s relationship with the Indian community has extended to the northern corridor of Melbourne, too, where the establishment of the Hume Bombers Junior Football Club for local Indian children has proven to be a raging success.
Essendon has also worked with businesses and various levels of government to help strengthen the sports diplomacy ties between India and Australia, even leading the formation of the inaugural Australian Kabbadi Team in 2016.
Sheedy spoke glowingly about the enormous development opportunities available for the sport in India during a visit last year, but said the nation needs support.
“You support them with jumpers and footies and one day you are going to get a big reward out of it,” Sheedy said.
“When you have got 1.4 billion people, there’s got to be talent there and that’s all you have to look for – there is a hell of an opportunity here.
“It is very much a country of upsides.”
