Essendon VFL has had four players named in the initial State squad to represent Victoria against Western Australia later this month.

Captain Nick O’Brien, James Ferry, Nick Hind and Alex Boyse were named in the squad that will take on the top players from the Western Australia Football League.

Coach Paul Corrigan said Hind and Boyse’s development since graduating from local football had been impressive.

“Boyse had an interrupted start to the season and through pre-season because of injury,” Corrigan said.

“He found some form late in the year and we gave him the opportunity and we really liked what he brought to the table.

“I think for him this year he has been able to get a full pre-season, so that has really helped him.”

Boyse has taken 19 marks in his two games this year, while Hind is averaging 23 possessions per game.

“Hind came late last year, he was a June 30 signing, in the back end of the year he played games for us,” Corrigan said.

“He has that speed dimension that we like, coming off half-back and we’ve been able to utilize that through the middle.”

This is the second straight year Ferry has been selected in the initial state squad.  Injury derailed his hopes last year, but he’s made a composed start to the season in defence for the Bombers.

Corrigan said the state game is a great opportunity for players to compete at a higher level and impress AFL recruiters.

“It’s fantastic for those guys to get that recognition on the first part of the season on their performances,” Corrigan said.

“I love the state game. I think it’s good for guys to get that recognition and play state footy, it’s fantastic.

“For the guys who are looking to get hopefully drafted, it’s another good experience to showcase their talents in a game where recruiters can have a look at them.”

“They are all capable of playing good football at that level. Hopefully for us they continue to have consistent seasons,” he said.

The final 23 players will be name closer to the game, which is scheduled for Saturday May 27.

“Hopefully they all get selected and get an opportunity to represent the state,” Corrigan said.

Essendon’s Nash Holmes was named is a development squad featuring up-and-coming talent from the VFL.

They're invited to train with the Victorian squad to help aid their development.
