Daniel Coghlan has described Saturday’s comeback 13-point win over Werribee as one of the best of his career.
The Bombers Captain was among a large number of players to put a forgettable first half behind them to contribute to the 53-point turnaround.
In his fourth season with the Bombers VFL, Coghlan said Saturday was high among the highlights.
“That was one of the better comebacks I’ve been involved in,” Coghlan said.
“It was good to get everyone going and everyone involved, everyone stood up which was the key – it wasn’t one or two this week it was the whole team.”
Essendon trailed by 33 points at half time and 40 points midway through the third quarter before kicking nine of the last 10 goals to claim victory.
Coghlan gathered 21 disposals (12 kicks, nine handballs), six tackles and five inside 50’s.
The 25 year-old said Matthew Egan and the coaches didn’t mince their words at the long interval.
“Ego spoke about just getting back to basics and winning the contests,” Coghlan said.
“He put it on a few of us mids who were getting beaten around the ball in the second quarter so that was one of the main focuses and we went from there.
“We felt we were in the game, absolutely. Hep (Aaron Heppell) made that diving save and we turned it around, we just took off from there.”
It was a jovial mood in the Bombers room post game with the captain diverting any attention to his teammates.
“You saw Francis’ goal from the boundary, he kicked three. Big Sammy Michael and Shauny McKernan, everyone contributed,” he said.
“Langford back was really handy; you could name the whole team really.”
Essendon’s win moves them into sixth position on the VFL ladder ahead of a bye this week. The Bombers will host Port Melbourne at Windy Hill from 2.10pm on Saturday, July 2.
