Essendon VWFL star Caleb Logan took an outstanding season to new heights at the Robert Rose Foundation Victorian Wheelchair Football League End of Season Celebration.
Logan claimed Essendon’s inaugural Best & Fairest Award and was selected as a forward in the VWFL Team of the Year after a season in which he finished with 31 goals from eight matches.
Only Richard Amon from eventual premiers Collingwood (55 goals) and Riley Fitzgerald from runners-up Richmond (53 goals) could boast a higher tally.
With five selections on court and three on the bench, only eight players from the five-team competition made up the maiden Team of the Year.
The awards ceremony at the Maurice Rioli Room in the Richmond Football Club capped an outstanding season for Logan that had already included his third selection for Victoria in the Wheelchair Australian Rules National Championships in March, as well as playing in the inaugural Essendon VWFL side.
Highlights of Logan’s season include a haul of seven goals against Hawthorn in round three, two matches of six goals against Richmond in round four and Hawthorn in round eight and two bags of four against Collingwood in round one and Richmond in round nine.
“He’s a really strong mark and leads well up and down the ground,” Essendon captain Louis Rowe said of his star forward.
“He’s a team player as well, so he was getting in there and getting the handballs as well.”
Essendon finished in fourth position ahead of Hawthorn with two wins, both coming at the Hawks’ expense. Rowe looks back on the improvements his charges made across the course of the 2018 season with pride.
“We improved a heap as a team. Although we didn’t get the scoreboard results, we were always competitive and there were a few games we lost by one or two goals and it could have been a different result where we could have been right up the ladder.
“We improved we played well as a team, we bonded really well and that’s all I can ask for.”
