Mason Redman has credited an experienced defensive group with his impressive, composed performance in Sunday’s 22-point victory over Brisbane.

The 20-year-old’s fourth senior game came more than two years since his latest AFL match in round nine, 2016, but he looked at home on The Gabba in his first victory for the Bombers.

Redman admitted getting his hands on the ball early helped him settle into the contest, but praised the calming influence of his side’s steady backline.

“Definitely getting the hands on the ball early helps me settle down,” Redman said post-match.

“Having Hooksey, Hurls in his 150th (game) and BJ (Goddard) in the backline, Matty Dea was superb as well.

“Their voice back there is really calming, so probably more so them than getting that early touch (helped me settle).”

Redman gathered 24 disposals and seven marks in the clash, using the ball smartly and helping cover the loss of skipper Dyson Heppell, who failed to play in the second half due to concussion.

While he was thrilled with his own efforts, Redman said he was happy just to be back in the senior side.

“It was awesome to get out there, it was obviously my first win for the club.

“(It was) a great team performance, so I was really stoked.

“Obviously been out of the team for just over two years now and it was just good to get back in and play with the boys and get the four points.”

Redman said he was confident he could slot into the side and play his role for the team after continuing to improve in the VFL system throughout the last two years.

“I felt like I was really ready to come into the side, I felt like I was really part of the team,” he said.

“Being out of the side for two years you really get to learn your craft and work with boys like I said before.

“It was just really good to get out there and just play with the boys.”

The Bombers now set for a week off and Redman says he expects the team to come out firing after the bye.

“Heading into the bye this week it’s a good confidence-booster for the team getting the four points.

“And then moving into our West Coast game we’ll be looking to get over there and shake things up a bit.

“Going into the bye and then the last half of the year, I think we’re looking really confident.”
