Essendon small forward Alwyn Davey says the Bombers have focused on the new sliding rule at training over the last few weeks to prepare themselves for the new rule during the home and away season.

Davey told The Hangar that the team had been working on the new interpretation in the lead up to Friday night’s season opener against Adelaide.

“We have been training the last two weeks working on both our tackling and the sliding rule as well so it is paying off,” Davey said.

The 28-year-old bagged three goals in the win over the Crows one of which came from a free kick he received against Adelaide defender Brent Reilly under the new law.

“I just went for the smother, got back up and I saw (Brent) Reilly diving on the ball and I knew that with the new rule it was going to be my free,” he said.

“I just planted my feet and as soon as he hit my legs I just went with a roll over.”

Davey said it was exciting to be part of the celebrations after the 35-point Round 1 win following a tough six weeks for the club during the pre-season.

“It was good all of the players got around each other after the game, including the coaches. To get a win like that interstate was something that meant a lot,” Davey said.
