Emerging tall Sam Draper has extended his contract with the Bombers for a further four years.
The new deal will see the young ruckman remain at The Hangar until at least 2023.
The cross-code talent made the transition from soccer to football in early 2016, before being selected by the Bombers in the 2017 AFL rookie draft.
Draper said he was excited to be remaining in the red and black for at least four more years.
“I’m thrilled to extend my contract at Essendon for another four years, with a group of players who are driven towards achieving success together,” Draper said.
“On a personal level, I’ll continue to work hard throughout the remainder of my rehabilitation program and strive towards an AFL debut.
“It was an easy decision to sign on with the Bombers. I’m really committed to this football club in our pursuit for success. I’m thankful for the faith the Club has shown in me early in my career and I am looking forward to seeing what this group can achieve over the coming years.”
General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said Draper’s commitment to the Bombers was a reflection of his team-first mentality.
“We're pleased Sam has committed to the club for the next four seasons. He is a key part of the club’s future and what we are building towards,” Dodoro said.
“While there was interest from other clubs, Sam’s decision demonstrates his commitment to the Essendon Football Club and strong connection building.
“Unfortunately, Sam suffered an injury setback this year which has delayed his debut, however the way he has handled himself is a testament to his character.
“Through his performances in the VFL earlier this season and dedication to his program, Sam has shown he has the potential to be a very good performer at AFL level. We are excited to see what he can achieve next year and beyond.”
