Get to know the seven Essendon VFL players that will line-up against St.Kilda this Saturday for our first game of the NAB Challenge.
Aaron Heppell:
Almost a carbon copy of brother Dyson, the younger Heppell is set to impress fans with his hard work and head over the ball attitude. Coach Hayden Skipworth believes fans can expect to see many similarities to Dyson’s game and should keep a close watch on Aaron in his first senior game.
Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti:
Better known as 'Tippa' around the club, the Tiwi local joined Essendon VFL in 2013 after impressing for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup. Tippa is an excitement machine, with his speed, strength and tenacity on the field sure to be a highlight of the game. After missing out on the draft last year, Tippa will surely be grateful for another chance to prove himself at the AFL level.
“It’s a great reward for all the hard work that he has put in over the past couple of years.” (Skippy)
Sam Tagliabue:
Standing at 206cm, will line-up alongside other Essendon ruckmen Shaun McKernan and Jonathan Giles in a triple-debut for the senior team. Moving from NSW two years ago to join Essendon VFL, Tagliabue has taken massive steps in his game to become one of the most promising talents in the VFL side. He’ll look to use his height both in the ruck and up forward, where he has shown the ability to kick goals.
Josh Freezer:
One of the more experienced players in the Essendon VFL side, Freezer’s opportunity to play AFL football has been a long-time coming. A stable in the side’s backline, the tall defender has the ability to shut-down key forwards and effectively clear the ball. Loyal to the red and black, Freezer is looking forward to playing on some of St.Kilda’s forwards.
Jordan Schroder:
Ex-Cat Jordan Schroder is one of the more recent names to join Essendon VFL. In his short time at the club the midfielder has already proven himself to be a valuable asset, adding great experience and composure to the team’s structures. A strong ability to win his own ball, Schroder will be an important addition to the NAB Challenge squad.
James Polkinghorne:
Returning to his home state after six years at the Lions, James Polkinghorne is eager to return to the AFL field. Polkinghorne has been a key addition to the Essendon VFL midfield able to share his AFL experience with the rest of the group. Known for his fierce contested attack on the footy Polkinghorne is a high impact player who will be key in the team’s success.
Marcus Marigliani:
A name that should be familiar to Essendon fans, Marigiliani returned to the club at the end of 2014 after being signed by Essendon VFL. Marigliani’s maturity and football smarts sees him well placed to impress against the Saints.
