An impressive crowd of over 2000 fans witnessed a thrilling finish to the ‘Australia Day Goes GLoBALL’ cricket showdown today between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at Windy Hill.

Despite accumulating an impressive 15 runs in the final two overs, the Renegades failed to match the calibre of talent dished up by the Stars who sealed victory with the help of Kyle Hardingham, Jake Carlisle, Essendon chairman David Evans and late inclusion Paul Hamilton.

In the final two overs of the game, Essendon stars David Myers and Henry Slattery had to shoulder the responsibility of a potential Renegades win, chasing 20 runs for victory, but fell short.

Stars player Matthew Wade wowed the crowd as he hit a number of impressive sixes leading the Stars to an eventual victory, showing why he was recently named in the Australian Twenty20 team.

Jake Carlisle was the standout performer for the Bombers, impressing the vocal crowd with his fast-paced bowling and attack.

Kyle Hardingham silenced Essendon team mate Michael Hibberd after he disputed the forward’s cricket abilities via Twitter during the week, with Hardingham smashing Hibberd for two sixes to the crowd’s delight.

Some power hitting from Rob Quiney and Clint McKay helped pushed the Stars to a total of 88 runs for the day.

Young gun Ryan Carters from the Melbourne Renegades accumulated runs from big boundary hits alongside Bombers star Ben Howlett, who also delivered handy runs to add to the Renegades tally.

Renegades bowler Jayde Herrick delivered where it counted, keeping the Stars batsmen quiet in his over.

Captain of the victorious Stars team Matthew Wade said he was pleased to have guided his side to victory on Australia Day.

“Today was a great way to celebrate Australia Day and in bringing awareness to the GLoBALL program as well as raising important funds for the Cancer Council,” Wade said.

Essendon star David Myers, who led the Renegades side for the day, also acknowledged the Australia Day festivities.

“Sport is a great way to bring people together and it was fantastic to see the crowd get behind both Essendon and the Melbourne Stars and Renegades for the GLoBALL program,” Myers said.

“Today was a terrific opportunity for all fans to head to Windy Hill and celebrate Australia Day with a little bit of cricket in between.”

Launched in 2009, the GLoBALL program is a joint initiative run by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria with the aim to assist international students and new migrants settle into life in Australia.
