Scans have confirmed a ruptured achilles for Sam Draper.

The ruck suffered the injury in the final term of Essendon’s win over West Coast on Friday night – scans on Sunday afternoon confirmed the Club’s initial concerns.

Draper’s injury unfortunately comes after a brilliant start to 2025, where the fan favourite was in career-best form and one of the best afield in Friday’s away clash.

Essendon will wrap their arms around Draper and support him through this period, with an estimated timeframe of return to come following his surgery early next week.

“We’re absolutely devastated for ‘Drapes’, who’s had a terrific start to the year,” GM – AFL Daniel McPherson said.

“He’s worked so hard over the course of the pre-season and had started the season really strongly.

“Sam’s obviously an important player for us but he’s also such a beloved member of this group by players, staff and fans alike. We’ll support him through his rehab.
