Xavier Duursma’s bow and arrow is back, and Bomber fans are loving it.

After five weeks on the sidelines from a quad injury, the winger brought serious energy in his return game on Sunday, accumulating 20 disposals, nine marks and a goal as the Dons ran away 30-point victors over the Eagles.

Spurred on by the 40,000-strong crowd at Marvel Stadium, the Bombers’ final-term run helped solidify the result and Duursma certainly felt the effects of that momentum from the fans.

“Thank you again to the Bomber faithful, 40,000 on a Sunday at 1pm is an amazing effort,” Duursma said.

“It’s very nice just to be out here playing and get through the game, to be able to win it and win well is even more exciting.”

Duursma brought the faithful to its feet in the third term, blasting clear of a pack to snap truly and bring out his trademark 'bow and arrow' goal celebration.

Giving the side a lift in a quarter that had mostly gone West Coast’s way, Duursma's been encouraged by the Bombers’ ability to respond under pressure and get their run going at important stages of the contest.

“We’re building something which is really exciting, being able to pull away at the end,” Duursma said.

“To handle (West Coast) and go from pressured to unpressured just by simple handballs and hitting the open ones makes a big difference and we were able to adjust with that and go around their defence.

“It’s always nice to pull out the bow and arrow. I liked it off the boot this time, it felt pretty sweet so I got it out pretty quick.”

Essendon’s wing depth has evolved over the course of the campaign with Nic Martin now predominantly utilised at half back, offering more opportunities for Duursma and occasionally Dyson Heppell to take on the role.

In recent weeks, the Bombers have opted for more height in the position, evidenced by Nik Cox and Harry Jones starting on the wings at centre bounces on Sunday, which is providing even more flexibility around the ground.

“All those boys did a great job, they stood up,” Duursma said.

“‘Coxy’ and ‘Jonesy’ are massive, so they have a fair bit of exploit there. They play on predominantly smaller wingers which is really good, they’re able to take multiple marks around the ground.”

Duursma and the Bombers have a tantalising run of games ahead, beginning with a top-eight encounter for the Country Game against Geelong on Saturday night.

Buoyed by the weekend’s result, Duursma’s hoping the Dons can keep finding ways to get the job done.

“Being able to stick with it and keep grinding away a win is massive for us,” Duursma said.

“We’ll take this momentum and keep building it, we’ve got a big game against Geelong next week, so we’ll recover and get ready.”
