Nate Caddy’s AFL debut gave Bomber fans glimpses of what to expect from the young key forward in future.
Last year’s No.10 draft pick looked comfortable under the bright lights of Dreamtime at the ‘G, grabbing 10 touches and a couple of strong contested marks in front of close to 80,000 people at the home of footy.
Caddy very nearly opened his AFL scoring account on a couple of occasions, including an early shot on goal which hit the inside of the post after earning himself a free kick from his dangerous aerial presence.
With the Bombers holding onto a 12-point win, Caddy relished the overall experience of a special Dreamtime debut.
“I’m pretty ecstatic, to be honest,” Caddy said.
“I went out there and just tried to soak it all in. I felt like I did alright, stuck to the process and really enjoyed it.”
Receiving his No.30 guernsey from Kyle Langford in the pre-game, Caddy cited his influence and the mentorship of the side’s experienced forwards as key factors in the very early days of his young career.
“‘Langers’ has been great to me since I got here,” Caddy said.
“He’s definitely kept me accountable and helped me when I needed to, so I’ve really enjoyed working with him and the rest of the forwards.
“They’ve all been really good to me and today they put me in the right spots.”
Surrounded by family members including mum Tania and dad Saul, the opportunity for Caddy to live out his childhood dream wasn’t lost on the support crew.
“Dad gets a bit carried away sometimes, but I’ve never seen him cry,” Caddy said.
“It shows he cares. He dreamt of playing in the AFL as well, maybe he was living his dream through me, so that’s kind of cool.”
