A group of Essendon Football Club members has today lodged a request for an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held in a bid to remove Managing Director Peter Jackson and Chairman Ray Horsburgh from the board. This meeting is required to be held some time in the next two months.
As members of the Club and in accordance with its constitution, members are entitled to make such a request provided they have 100 signatures of members. The request had 108 valid membership records and signatures attached to it.
The group want to pass two resolutions. The first resolution is to remove managing director Peter Jackson as a director of the Club. The second resolution is to remove Chairman Ray Horsburgh as a director of the Club.
All Club members with voting rights will be given the opportunity to vote with a greater than 50% majority required to have the resolution passed. The Club was last night trying to arrange to hold discussions with some of the members concerned.
“We live in a democratic society and under the constitution they have every right to call for an EGM,” Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said. “This process was always going to be difficult given the emotion that comes with making a decision such as this.”
“However I think most people understand the board is charged with making difficult decisions in the best interests of the Club and that is what we did. The board made a decision that we believe will help get this Club building for the future.”
Departing Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy has previously asked Club members to move on. “It has been a wonderful 27 years for myself and the Club. It has been a great partnership but it is time to move on,” Sheedy said in a recent article.
“I have heard some members suggest they want to cut up their membership and will stop supporting the Club but I sincerely hope that is not the case. I appreciate their support but together we have worked hard to make this a great Club and I hope all Essendon fans remain faithful to the Club.”
