Essendon Coach John Worsfold has backed the players resolve despite the results of the past fortnight.
Although the Bombers suffered an eight point loss to Brisbane, Worsfold has full faith the side can get back to playing their brand of football.
“We are a pretty resilient strong group and two games where we haven’t played well in 20 or 30 minutes of footy – I don’t think is a strong indication of where we are at,” Worsfold said.
“A lot of other people, in any industry, would have struggled to maintain the level of performance these guys have.
“Not only the players who had to sit through a suspension but their teammates who had to wear the emotion with them.
“I’m very proud of the resilience and toughness of this group.”
Worsfold said the players drove the review of the Brisbane loss.
“They’re (the players) extremely important because they’re the ones that have to be aligned with what they’re trying to achieve,” he said.
“I’m a coach who definitely expects the players to drive what they expect from each other and the more they talk to each other, the more they get an understanding of what’s acceptable and what goes out of the lines of the way we want to play.
“They pretty much drive it.
“Our reviews are basically focusing on what we want to produce this week and learning what we have over the last few weeks, but learning from the whole year.
“We weren’t just disappointed with the last quarter, we were disappointed with our first three quarters as well.
“We are confident that that’s not the way we play.
“We’re very clear on the way we want to play footy and we’re very clear that we didn’t play that way on the weekend.”
A number of the Bombers leadership group were criticised in the media for their performance against the Lions, but Worsfold said the onus is on everyone to improve,
“I don’t think it’s just been our leaders, I think it’s been all of us that have to be accountable to the way we played,” Worsfold said.
“We’re absolutely all on the same page, we underperformed and that’s not taking anything away from the performance that Brisbane put up.
“We were disappointed with the way we played the game and we’re accountable to that and we take criticism for that.”
