Essendon's VFL side has made rapid improvement in recent weeks and it faces another significant test this weekend when it tackles Williamstown at Pt Gellibrand Oval, Williamstown.
While it will be the first time these two clubs have met, there is a special piece of history that links the two clubs.
Williamstown president Trevor Monti recently claimed Ned Kelly was the club's number one ticketholder in the winters of 1873 and 1874.
And the Bombers also have a connection with the infamous Bushranger.
Ian "Bluey" Shelton was one of the toughest ever players to grace the turf at Windy Hill and he only got that far thanks to Ned Kelly.
Ned Kelly once saved the life of Bluey's grandfather - apparently dragging him from a river when he was drowning.
Had that not happened Bluey would never have become one of the Bombers' favorite sons.
So to commemorate the link these two clubs have with the past, the Ned Kelly Memorial Trophy has been struck and will be presented to the best player on the ground.
And "Bluey" Shelton will be a guest of both clubs at the Williamstown Football Club luncheon.
This weekend's match starts at 2.00pm and the Pt Gellibrand Oval is located on Morris Street, Williamstown.
Both clubs urge supporters to get down to Williamstown and have a look at what should be a great game. Essendon members will be admitted for $4 and car parking is free.
The first 250 kids through the gates wearing an Essendon or Williamstown jumper will receive a free Ned Kelly souvenir.
Anyone interested in attending the club luncheon should call Brendan Curry on 96891877 or 0409857308. The $20 cost is all inclusive.
