Essendon has used draft selection 50 to bolster its midfield stocks selecting Sam Lonergan from Lauderdale - the club that is the Bomber's affiliate club in Tasmania. An inside midfielder, the 18-year-old stands 183cm and weighs 81kg. Lonergan did not attend the AFL Draft camp but was one of the standouts in the State-based screening.

He captained the Allies against Victoria on Grand Final week, kicked five goals and was the leading possession winner on the ground. He also became the first player in the history of the Tassie Mariners to win back-to-back best and fairest awards. He played eight games for the Tassie Devils in the VFL competition and he attracted significant interest from Melbourne, Hawthorn and the Kangaroos.

As previously reported, Essendon took Jay Neagle with its third round selection under the father-son rule. The Bombers took exciting big man Patrick Ryder with their first selection and running midfielder Courtney Dempsey with selection number two.

Austin Lucy, from the Suncoast Lions was the Bombers final selection. Anticipated to go earlier in the draft, the Bombers picked the tall back at selection 66. Hailing from a rugby background, Lucy stands at 192cm and weighs 90kg. He represented Queensland in this year's under-18 title where he had a terrific carnival and was named All-Australian at full back.

Essendon passed on selection 72 and 76.
