The countdown to season 2002 is on in earnest and in our continuing Engine Room series we look at the senior listed players and pin-point their roles in the upcoming season. Today we take a look at MARK MERCURI. Mark Mercuri had a season 2001 he would largely prefer to forget. A knee injury early in the season played havoc with the remainder of the year. He struggled to regain full fitness and his form suffered as a result. A proud footballer, it is a season that won’t sit well with him and it is hardly surprising he has been one of the stars of the 2002 pre-season.

Mercuri is undoubtedly one of the stars for the Bombers. A match-winner on his day, his precise disposal and running ability makes him one of the most “watchable” Bombers. At 28, Mercuri is in the prime of his football career and he will want to make the most of the remainder of his career. He has two Premierships under his belt and he would dearly love a third.

Mercuri still managed to average about 16 possessions per game in 2001 – only two possessions less per game than he managed in 2000. But the more telling statistic was on the scorebaord. He kicked 33.19 from the 20 games he played in 2000 – he managed 10.10 from the same number of games last season. It is critical that he returns to the heights of 2000.

Mercuri inspires those around him on the football field and is one of the players that every new player to the club looks up to. He has set a fine example for these young players during the pre-season. As vice-captain of the club he will have taken on the challenge of lifting everyone around him to greater heights as 2002 approaches.

What will his role be on match day?

Mercuri will spend much of his time across half forward where his pace and creativity can set the Bombers forward line alight. He will be a part of the Bombers mid-field rotation – his ability to read the play and win the hard ball setting up many forward thrusts for his side.

What will the coaches expect on match day?

The Essendon coaching staff will want to see Mercuri super fit, super keen and back to his brilliant best in season 2002. They will want him to contribute two goals per game – 44 would be an excellent return for the home and away season. They will want to him to have a real impact during his short bursts on the ball.
