Despite playing a pivotal role in the Bombers’ sensational 55-point win over the Kangaroos yesterday, David Hille was keeping a lid on things while speaking to media this morning.

“We can’t deny that we were very pleased with the way we performed yesterday,” Hille said.

“We are still trying to build a new team essentially but we are only one game into the season and have played a couple of good games in the preseason.

“We are just looking to improve and slowly implement the new coach’s processes and I think it will be an ongoing process for the whole season.”

For Hille, the victory signifies more than just four points. He believes the early win should inspire the coach and his younger team-mates and create selection pressure heading into the season.

“I think the win is good for the young players in our team to get confidence moving forward early on in the season,” Hille said.

“It is good to have the pressure on the fringe of the team and we have some other guys coming back from injury who are creating pressure also. It is a good position for our team to be in, there is pressure on the guys in the side to keep on performing well.”

Although disappointed with the thought of Scott Lucas missing 9-12 weeks with a knee injury, Hille said the Bombers boast a diverse enough list to function well in his absence.

“It is obviously disappointing for Scott but he will have some scans in the next couple of days and hopefully we will hear some good news and he can get onto his recovery and get back into it as soon as possible,’ Hille said.

“The good thing at the moment is we do have players on the fringe who are looking to come in and looking to be a part of what we are doing. Courtney Johns is one guy who is yet to come in to the side who we can rotate through the forward line. Adam McPhee and Nathan Lovett-Murray have also shown they can play well down there.

“I think one of the focuses for this year was to have myself and Jason rotating through the forward line a little bit more than we had in the past couple of years. Although that may have happened regardless of Scott’s injury, it does present another option.”

Playing a key hand in the Bombers’ thrilling victory, Hille not only wants to see his team playing well but hopes to grow as a player.

“I obviously want to perform a lot better this year than I did last year. I was very disappointed in myself so I want to put my best foot forward and I think I have tried to do that over preseason and hopefully that continues through the year.”
