Essendon will unveil number one draft pick Andrew McGrath in the opening JLT Community Series match against Collingwood on Thursday.
McGrath became the Bombers first ever number one draft selection when the Dons called out his name last November.
Throughout 2016, McGrath rocketed up the draft rankings with consistent performances, culminating in 38 possessions in the Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup Grand Final win.
The former Brighton Grammar student recorded top-ten results in the repeat sprint, agility and vertical jump tests at the Draft Combine and was named in the All-Australian under 18 side.
Since arriving at Essendon, McGrath has trained with the defenders.
“He’s had a good, solid pre-season and gets his opportunity to run out with the guys for the first time in the Essendon Guernsey,” Coach John Worsfold said.
“He’s a really explosive, creative player who will be very nervous but he’ll match up on Collingwood’s small forwards and we’re really confident in the way he’ll go about it.”
Josh Green and James Stewart have also been picked for their first appearances in the red and black.
Green, a former Brisbane Lions leading goal kicker, was on a modified training program before Christmas, but has impressed coaches with his attitude on the track.
“He had a foot injury and that curtailed a lot of his ability to play and train last year,” Worsfold said.
“We eased him in but once he was back into full training he’s done really well.
“His attitude has been great, he’s really knuckled down to get himself to the point where we’re really pleased with his overall fitness and we’re looking forward to what he can bring to the team.”
Stewart is set to occupy a key forward role on Thursday night in the absence of Joe Daniher and Cale Hooker.
“James Stewart was a key signing for us because we wanted to add some depth in that area,” Worsfold said.
“He’s young, he’s only the same age as Joe Daniher so he’s very much a developing key forward.
“While Joe and Cale aren’t going to be available for this first JLT game, ‘Stewie’ will get the opportunity to hold down that position for us.”
