Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy has laid down the law to his players – get your discipline right this week or you can work on getting it right in the VFL. A clearly frustrated Sheedy said he was disappointed with his side’s lack of discipline last Friday night against Adelaide. The Bombers gave away a season-high 31 free kicks and had two players reported. “We have worked on it for quite some time and you would think the players would know better by now,” Sheedy said.

“The players have been spoken to and they have to react to that otherwise they suffer a penalty from our own selection panel. We let ourselves down, our teammates down and our club down. I’ve never written up anything on the board (before a game) instructing them to do what they did on the weekend,” Sheedy said.

“We have worked on our technique in the last three weeks but our tackling has just been too high. With the older players I think it is just frustration and the fact they are not playing as well as they would like. I still think the players have got to be smarter and play common sense footy – direct their aggression at the ball. It is as simple as that.

“It is very frustrating because we work hard to get our injuries right and build up our performance and then you see players doing silly things through a lack of concentration – it really lets the team down. Generally some of our really good tacklers didn’t tackle that well on Friday night. We will just go out tonight and practice our tackling again.”

Essendon full back Dustin Fletcher and forward Damian Cupido will face the AFL tribunal tomorrow night. Fletcher has been charged with striking while Cupido is facing an unduly rough play charge.
