Essendon interim CEO Ray Gunston believes it is still too early to tell how the AFL’s proposed equalisation plans will affect the club.
Speaking from the Gold Coast where all 18 chief executives met yesterday to discuss the initiatives, Gunston revealed that all clubs supported the notion of equalisation across the competition.
“The main focus at the conference was around the ideas of equalisation and revenue sharing,” Gunston said.
“It was about ensuring we have a competition that is competitive and equalised and providing good quality football every week for fans.
“There is a strong acknowledgement of the need to ensure our competition stay competitive against other sporting codes.
Gunston said that despite the full support from clubs, it was important to ensure Essendon was still well represented.
“From an Essendon perspective, we will obviously keep monitoring the situation and keep on top of it, but we need to support the AFL’s initiatives because we do need a strong competition,” he said.
“But we do need to make sure we’re well represented in the outcomes of that. It is critical that everyone supports it, but obviously for each club the devil is in the detail.
“The major piece of work at the moment is figuring out what the gap is between the bigger and smaller clubs and who exactly are in those categories.
“Everybody understands that but everyone will have to work through that from a club perspective.”
