Essendon’s development group will undertake an intense training camp at the club’s True Value Solar Centre this week.

The club’s first to third year players who are not attending the high altitude trip in Boulder will take part in the three-day camp.

Development coach James Byrne said he expected the camp would provide an important bonding experience amongst the group.

“It is about building confidence within the group through some intense, hard training,” Byrne said.

“We are rapt with the dynamics of the young group and we think we will get some really good results.

“Hopefully they will have a look at the end of it thinking ‘if I can get through that well I can get through some hard times’ throughout the year.”

The camp will include intense physical training, guest speakers and a strong-man competition.

Byrne said the challenges the group would face over the coming days would hold them in good stead heading into the 2014 season.

“We are hoping to improve their leadership by getting them as a group and working together both physically and mentally.”

“We want them to mold as a group and as a team in regards to their leadership and resilience.”

“Hopefully they can hone their skills in that area and they will be put through some duress so we want to see them build some confidence in that area.”
