The Dick Reynolds Club is proud to present the ‘Merv Neagle Tribute Dinner’ on Thursday 22 August at the Grand Hyatt.
Merv tragically passed away in August 2012, leaving behind wife Donna and his six children. In support of the Neagle family, this Gala Event will be hosted by Essendon legend Tim Watson and will feature many of Merv’s beloved Essendon and Sydney teammates.
Merv Neagle was a talented, tough and uncompromising wingman who gave his all for his teammates and supporters alike. He played 147 games for Essendon between 1977 and 1985 and 56 games for Sydney between 1986 and 1990.
Merv was an imperative member of Essendon’s 1984 premiership side and finished second in the 1980 Brownlow Medal count. He ended his career at the Sydney Swans in 1990.
Lifelong friend Tim Watson described Merv as a loveable larrikin who was great footballer in one of Essendon’s golden eras.
Essendon premiership teammate Simon Madden said the evening would be a wonderful tribute to a great person.
“It’s fantastic that the club is coming together for a night in memory of Merv,” Madden said.
“There’s going to be great entertainment, a number of our teammates and a lot of people getting together to celebrate his life and assist his beautiful family.
“Merv was a great player for the Essendon Football Club, a hard, tenacious player that was incredibly skilful but more than that, he was a wonderful teammate both on and off the field.
“Terry Daniher summed it up best when he described Merv as simply ‘a really good bloke’,” he said.
It will be a night of great entertainment, big surprises, inspiring footy yarns from the great story tellers, heartfelt fare, plenty of auction items and raffles, with all proceeds going to the “Neagle Family Trust”.
Essendon teammates including Paul Van der Haar, Terry Daniher, Paul Salmon, Mark Harvey, Mark Thompson, Simon Madden and his former Sydney teammates Tony Morwood, Gerard Healy, Anthony Daniher, Paul Kelly and Barry Mitchell will all be present on the evening. Many of Merv’s adversaries including Dermott Brereton, Robert DiPierdomenico and Doug Hawkins will also be in attendance.
