A late burst from Richmond has given Essendon its fifth consecutive loss, falling 12.10 (82) to 12.12 (84).
Despite leading by as many as 30 points early in the final term, the Bombers found themselves unable to contain the Tigers’ momentum, conceding the final five goals of the game.
The Dons had a last-ditch chance to snatch victory on Sunday at the MCG after Tom Phillips won himself a free kick on the final siren 55 metres from goal, but the distance proved too much of a hurdle to trouble the scorers.
It was a disappointing result given the positive signs on the day for Essendon, who looked impressive over sustained periods early with some solid individual performances across the board.
Riley Loton and Brad Bernacki worked tirelessly in the midfield, with Loton particularly manful in laying 11 tackles for the game.
Nick Bryan continued his outstanding form in the ruck, recording 25 disposals and 37 hit-outs in another terrific showcase of his versatility.
Lewis Hayes was a brick wall down back, taking 11 marks and providing a much-needed intercept presence as he continues his early progression.
Pat Voss and Anthony Munkara were the liveliest scoring options, combining for five majors – Dons fans can feel especially excited by Munkara, who delivered his best performance of the season to date.
Matt Guelfi’s return was another welcome sight for the Essendon faithful, finishing with two goals on managed minutes in his comeback from a hamstring injury.
The Dons will be looking to tidy up their lapses and make amends against Box Hill on Sunday, kicking off at 1:05pm at the NEC Hangar.
