Zach Merrett knows that Dreamtime at the ‘G holds a big opportunity for his Bombers to showcase their young talent on the big stage.
Speaking to the media at the MCG on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s clash with Richmond, Merrett remained buoyed by the Dons’ evolving midfield mix despite the losses of experienced ball-winners Darcy Parish and Will Setterfield to injury.
“It’s presenting some amazing opportunities that guys probably wouldn’t have had,” Merrett said.
“Jye Caldwell is ready to go, and Archie Perkins is a young talent for us that we’re super excited with. It’s amazing exposure for those boys.”
Merrett is also confident in the positive signs shown from the squad in recent weeks against some of the competition’s elite, despite some tough results.
“We’re obviously a win-loss industry and we’ve lost four games (in a row), so that’s disappointing and it hurts,” Merrett said.
“[But] I think that the way that we’re playing is holding up and holding us in games, so that is pleasing.”
Merrett has also been impressed by the character shown in certain Dons who’ve become flexible to new roles and positions considering recent injuries and changes to the line-up.
“We’re getting some great wins along the way in individuals that are playing some great footy,” Merrett said.
“Andy McGrath, Kyle Langford, these guys have really stepped up from previous years and we’re starting to get some more depth throughout the field.”
The announcement of Saturday’s match fully selling out has only added to the excitement for Merrett, who will be hoping the Dons can thrive in front of a loud home faithful at the MCG.

“This is a chance for us to compete and try to get the four points for the first time in a long time against them,” Merrett said.
“To hear it’s a sell-out crowd, I don’t think you get to play in many games bigger and better than this one, so the boys are absolutely excited and pumped to get out there.”
