Who will replace Jobe?
Who will captain the Bombers in place of Jobe Watson over the next month? We take a look at the contenders who are a part of the Bombers leadership group.
Brendon Goddard
Goddard is the most experienced player on Essendon’s list behind only defender Dustin Fletcher having played 219 matches. He was a key part of the leadership group at St. Kilda during their finals campaigns in recent years and has been integral in bringing the best out of some of his younger teammates since joining the Bombers in the off-season.
Brent Stanton
Stanton has been passed fit to play against the Bulldogs despite an ankle concern and would be one of the favourites to take the reigns from Watson. He has had one of his most consistent seasons of his career in 2013 and is well respect among his teammates for his work rate.
David Zaharakis
Zaharakis is a born leader who has been a consistent performer all season but also has the ability to lift for the occasion. He was a standout against Port Adelaide last weekend in the absence of Watson and along with Heppell will be important future leaders for the red and black.
Dyson Heppell
The youngest member of the Bombers leadership group Heppell is unlikely to be handed the role but would be capable if given the duties in the skippers absence. Is seen by many at the club as the future captain with not only the ability to lead on the field but also holds the respect of his peers off it.
Heath Hocking
Hocking is currently out of the side with a calf injury.
Michael Hurley
Hurley is a man that leads by example with his aggression and passion for the red and black evident every time he runs on the field. His hard at it nature is sure to inspire his teammates and he is admired among his teammates for his ability on the field to lead by his actions.
Jason Winderlich
Like all of those in the leadership group Winderlich is clearly respected amongst his teammates with his voice evident on the field in each game. He is an important influence on the field giving direction to his younger teammates and has had plenty of experience at AFL level.
The last time Jobe didn’t captain the Bombers was Round 18, 2011 when he missed with a hamstring injury.
