In the lead up to Thusday night’s National Draft on the Gold Coast we take a look back in time at some of the best and worst on draft night for the Bombers.
The 1998 draft would unveil two of the great clubman to walk through the doors of Windy Hill to wear the red and black.
The club entered the draft with six live selections in the draft, with its first selection at pick nine.
Young New South Welshman Mark McVeigh would be taken by the Bombers from Penant Hills and go on to carve out a famous 232 game career in the red and black.
McVeigh went on to become one of the most respected and loved players of the last decade.
It was a similar much loved and respected character that came from selection 12 with Adam Ramanauskas selected form the Dandenong U18 side.
Just two year’s later he would go on to be a regular member in the club’s 2000 premiership side, a team that lost just one game for the season.
In a shock to the football world, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and would have to fight the battle with cancer numerous times throughout the remainder of his career.
He announced his retirement at the end of the 2008 season after 134 games with the club and leaving a legacy that would be honoured for year’s to come in the form of the club’s annual Clash for Cancer match.
Recruited from Corowa-Rutherglen at selection 25, Aaron Henneman was a promising key defender and ruckman.
An injury stricken career ended in 2005 with 58 games to his name.
At pick 36 the Bombers took young utility Danny Jacobs who would go on to play 126 matches at AFL level.
After a strong start to his career at Essendon with 81 matches, Jacobs was traded to Hawthorn where he retired in 2008.
