Essendon star Michael Hurley says he wants to play primarily as a forward this season despite ongoing debate about his best position on the ground.

Hurley booted 26 goals from 16 games in 2012 playing across half forward and is comfortable playing that role.

“I want to play centre half-forward,” Hurley told the Herald Sun.

“We are lucky enough to have five or six really good backs at the moment and I think I am best suited for the club in the forward line and I am really enjoying the challenge of learning the craft there.”

Hurley has showed his potential playing as a defender and a forward since his debut in 2009, he has booted 75 goals from 63 games.

“Hirdy has said to me, ‘We will play you where we need you,’ so I may end up back and I am easy with that, but I am really enjoying my footy forward,” he said.

“I suppose it can be frustrating at times not knowing where you are playing but as long as the side is going well and I am going well, I can’t complain.”

Hurley, who has signed a contract to remain at the club for a further five years, is a member of the Bombers eight man leadership group and aware it is his turn to stand up and lead the club.

“It’s been great to see how it all works. Last year I learnt a lot from guys like Mark McVeigh and Jobe Watson. I am getting older, so guys like me and aka and Myresy have to take charge of the club.”

“I think that it has been fairly up and down for myself and the footy club for the past couple of years. As we mature and as time goes on, and we play more game, I think that year is not far away.”

The key position player is looking more slim this year having dropped 6-7kgs in the off-season which has assisted in his running and endurance, a key asset required to play at centre half forward.

“I have had both wrists operated on now and both thumbs, so hopefully, touch wood, they are all good. So there was less upper-body weights, and the running program changed.”
