Previous form counts for nothing when it comes to ANZAC Day, according to Captain Brendon Goddard.

Goddard was adamant that the boys would be taking no shortcuts in their preparation for Monday’s game against Collingwood.

Despite the Pies’ recent lack of form, Goddard knows that the importance of the day – and the nature of the game itself, means that anything could happen.

Both sides sit at one win from four games, but it is the Pies who have attracted the majority of the media’s scrutiny with questions over their form early in the season.

“Collingwood have obviously had their struggles, but we’re preparing for Collingwood’s best,” said Goddard

“It’s going to come at some stage, hopefully it’s maybe just delayed a week or two.

“We always expect the best from the opposition, that helps you train the brain regardless of their situation.”

Despite a spirited performance against the Cats last week, Goddard is aware how long a week in football can be and urged his teammates to train hard in preparation for what is set to be a good, hard fought game.

Essendon will be looking to edge one back on their rivals, having only won two out of the last ten ANZAC Day encounters - with the last coming in 2013.

The Pies may be without key forward Travis Cloke, who suffered an injury in their Round Four loss to the Demons.

While Goddard believes that Essendon will benefit from not having the forward to contend against, he insists that the team can take no chances during this week’s match preparation.

“We’re preparing regardless of who Collingwood put on the field, we’re preparing for Collingwood’s best.”

“I think (Cloke) has proven to be a real quality player over the years.

“I think a team without (Cloke) is only going to help our cause, but whatever happens is up to them.

“That’s one of the attractions have coming to Essendon, I know it was one of mine.”

There have been questions raised as to whether Essendon still deserve to participate in the big game, given the Club’s circumstances this year.

Goddard has been particularly vocal in his defence of the Club’s participation, believing that regardless of either side’s form, fans are always in for a good show.

“I think it’s a little disrespectful towards Sheeds and Gubby Allen who initiated the concept,”

“We’re lucky enough to be a part of it and I know there are other Clubs that are paritipating, and I know that footy is being played on ANZAC Day for a long time.

“It was their initiative and essential we’re the marquee match played on ANZAC Day.

“Regardless of form, regardless of ladder position I think it’s only fair that Collingwood and Essendon participate forever.”
