After missing out on Essendon's first four matches, Will Snelling couldn't have asked for a better first game.
In the Bombers' win over Melbourne, Snelling wasted no time punching his name on the scorecard with kicking the first goal of the match.
For Snelling, the journey back into this season's best 22 has not been easy, with the small forward having to navigate the emergency list and VFL in order to make his return.
Despite this, the expectation was always clear for when his name was finally called.
Pressure, tackle and hit the scoreboard.
“It has been really clear what my role will be within the team whether it’s pressure or hitting the scoreboard,” he said.
“We’re building a hallmark in our game of tackle pressure around the ground.”
Despite being a double-edged sword for himself, Essendon's small forward depth is a problem Snelling knows is a good one.
“There are some good guys in there setting the tone,” Snelling said.
“It creates the environment of high performance, everyone knows if they don’t perform their spot could be a bit shaky.
“We’ve got a lot of guys that can roll through there now.”

For those looking for a recall into the now four and one side, strong VFL form will be necessary.
“I know with myself I had to spend some time in the VFL and sharpen the sword there,” Snelling said.
“To be able to make my return on my home deck as well is pretty nice.”
