Essendon will be looking to back up a strong performance against Richmond when it takes on GWS at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night.

Defender Cale Hooker this morning stressed the importance of not giving the young Giants an inch.

“We’re going to have to be on our game this week, because they are a talented side, and if you give them a sniff, they’re up and about,” emphasised Hooker.

“We saw how they played last week against Hawthorn, and we’re going to have to be right on our money.”

After a breakout year in 2013, Hooker has bettered himself to start this season to become a genuine focal point for the Bomber defence.

Remarkably for a key defender, he has taken 96 marks this season and tops the list. Next best is St Kilda captain, Nick Riewoldt who has taken 85 marks.

Asked what was the turning point for his outstanding form, Hooker said he worked closely with assistant coach Sean Wellamn last season.

“I think working with Sean Wellman last year, he helped me a lot,” Hooker admitted.

Hooker added that an established backline has also added to his sensational form.

“I think also our backline has improved as a group, and we’re a lot more settled now as a back six. We can sort of feed of each other and cover for each other a bit more, and it’s definitely helping my game,” said Hooker.

Saturday night will be a big challenge for Hooker and the backline as they try to contain the tall forward line of the Giants, including Jonathan Patton and potentially Tom Boyd.
